Our Story- A Devine Assignment!
Back At Home wasn’t something written into a business plan—it was a calling. It began in 2017, after my father, KC (William Reed Jr.), passed away from kidney complications. Shortly after, I dreamed of him sitting peacefully in his den of our old family home. The next day, I drove by and saw it dark, abandoned, with a notice in the window. It was in pre-foreclosure.
A second dream led me to discover the house had gone up for auction that very day—and I bought it, for the same price my parents paid over 20 years earlier. That home, now KC’s House, became our first Sobriety Home, offering safe, supported housing for men choosing a new path. KC was a quiet warrior for sobriety, attending AA daily and sponsoring others. He left behind a legacy of recovery and strength—and pockets full of sobriety coins.
Next came The W House, a beautifully restored home I originally planned to sell. But I couldn’t let it go—it was meant for more. Then there was Granny’s House, once owned by my grandmother Florence Lewis, a longtime leader at St. Francis House. I felt deeply moved to restore it, not knowing why—until the vision unfolded.
In 2022, my cousin suggested using the homes for transitional housing. At first, I brushed it off. But the idea kept coming back—through friends, social media, conversations. What disturbed me most was the lack of dignity in many housing options: prison-like facilities, no support, poor conditions.
That’s when Auntie Ebony’s House was born—a nurturing space for young women, especially those exiting foster care or juvenile systems, to heal, build businesses, and grow in independence. Uncle Markus’ House, for young men, will follow.
Today, Back At Home provides short- and long-term transitional housing with a difference. Our residents don’t just get a bed—they find mentorship, job access, community, and a renewed sense of self. For many, it’s the first place they’ve felt safe and truly at home.
Back At Home is more than housing.
It’s healing. It’s legacy. It’s family.
